Why System Design Is Different
DSA has clear right/wrong answers. System design doesn't. The interviewer is evaluating your thinking process, trade-off awareness, and experience — not just the final diagram.
This is why AI assistance for system design is uniquely powerful: it helps you structure your thinking, not just copy an answer.
The 7-Step System Design Framework
Use this framework for every system design question:
1. Clarify Requirements (2 min)
Ask: "Is this read-heavy or write-heavy? What's the expected scale? Any geographic distribution requirements?"
2. High-Level Architecture (3 min)
Draw or describe the major components:
- Client → Load Balancer → API Gateway → Services → Databases
3. Deep Dive — Core Components (10 min)
Pick the most critical component and go deep. If designing Twitter, go deep on the Tweet fan-out service.
4. Scalability Discussion (5 min)
"Now scale it to 100M users. What breaks first?"
5. Trade-offs (3 min)
"Why SQL over NoSQL here?" — AI helps you articulate CAP theorem trade-offs clearly
6. Failure Modes (2 min)
"What happens when the database goes down? When the message queue backs up?"
7. Monitoring & Observability
"What metrics would you track? What alerts would you set up?"
